Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial. This fall we were at a street carnival and one of the acts was a woman laying on a bed of nails.

For many people in the crowd, it was an act that resulted in gasps and whispers of how thick this young lady’s skin must be to endure that.  But in reality, laying on a proper bed of nails would not be painful as your weight and body are distributed over the entire “bed”, allowing for you to lay comfortably atop the nails.  Now, having an actual bed of nails laying around your house likely isn’t advisable due to the risk of injury – if someone were to trip and fall on it, it would probably hurt since you were not distributing your weight evenly, or your pets might get mixed up with it, or some other issue.  Some of you may have gotten to this point and are asking why you would want one, unless you were planning on being a sideshow act in a carnival, and I will tell you why: your health!  Yes, that is right, it is believed that lying atop a bed of nails can improve your overall health, using the methods of acupressure and acupuncture, in which certain points of your body relief endorphins when triggered by the pressure of the nails.  If you are looking for a safe and portable bed of nails option, check out Bed of Nails, a company that offers products modeled from the bed of nails line of thinking.  I received a Bed of Nails mat in exchange for my honest opinion.

What did I think?

As someone who loves and touts the benefits of acupunture, I was really excited about this mat!  I can speak from my own experiences about how healing and energy promoting acupuncture can be.   This mat has sharp plastic ‘nails’ that when you lay down on the mat, you will get a similar sensation to that of laying on an actual bed of nails.  They recommend using the mat daily for at least 10 minutes to achieve maximum results.  I have found that using the Bed of Nails mat has helped with my back pain and overall energy level.  They also offer a pillow, which I think would help my migraines and neck soreness tremendously!

The Verdict

If you are looking to try a new way to reduce pain, stress, insomnia or other ailments, but are afraid to jump right into acupuncture or are looking for a way to extend the benefits of your acupuncture session, check out the Bed of Nails mat.  I found that using this after my treatments, I was able to maintain my relaxed state from post-acupuncture treatment longer.  While I recommend being very cautious with use around small children, my girls are familiar with acupressure treatments and my four year old found the mat to be very soothing when she was feeling upset.  You can visit Bed of Nails on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about the benefits of acupressure and the Bed of Nails products!
