As the girls get older, I get excited about the games that we can introduce to them and play for our weekly family game nights. My friends over at Winning Moves, the leading manufacturer of board games for companies such as Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley and Hasbo, sent us three classic versions of class board games that have been high on our list of board games to introduce to the girls since as long as I can remember! I received these games in exchange for my honest opinion.
What did I think?
Once again, Winning Moves delivers on games that are well-made and beautifully packaged. The classic versions of Monopoly, Clue and The Game of Life are just as I remember from my childhood and that made me all the more excited to play them with my girls. I love the classic versions of games since it ensures there will not be any electronics, television characters or anything else that will render the games moot in the future. While we have not played Monopoly yet with the girls (you know how that is, you need to clear what feels like an entire day to get that game completed!), hubby and I did play a fast-paced version where we dealt out the properties. I have not played Classic Monopoly in years! It was so much fun – I know that the girls will enjoy it for years to come and we are excited to play this with our friends at our next Friend Game Night! (Psst… if you play at my house, you should know that I always try to get all of the pink properties and hubby will do almost anything to secure the red ones!)
For Family Game Night this week, we introduced the girls to The Game of Life. The board is beautiful and the classic style, to me, is so much better than any other version out there. I love how this game teaches kids about planning ahead (college or go to work?), risk assessment (insurance and stock, anyone?) and counting money (or hoarding a giant pile like Miss LadyBug was doing!). We had a great time with this game – the girls even started naming their spouses (Miss Goose named her’s Buck – we’re not sure where that came from, but it certainly made us laugh!) and their kids. As it turns out, the classic version has a Millionaire Tycoon “all or nothing” way to win the game if you were headed for life on the poor farm and hubby took that measure to win the game! Overall, this game was full of laughter and learning – so much fun!
Since Family Game Night has resulted in so much fun in our house, we decided to introduce a monthly Friend Game Night. We invite our friends and their families over so that the kids can play board games together and the adults can play games, too! This month, we played Classic Clue and had a blast! Most of our crew had never played, or it had been decades since we last played, so we were excited that the directions provided were so clear and easy to follow to get us up to speed! Classic Clue is a fun game of “Who Done It?” and of course, the epicenter of many jokes. The pieces for the game have a lot of detail and add a lot of fun and whimsy to this board game. We had a blast and are looking forward to playing Clue again and again with our friends!
